I am a Roman Catholic who happens to live in America, a country I truly love. My political allegiance, as an American Catholic, is to the candidates who comes closest to supporting and seeking to live out Christian values, who upholds and defends the dignity of the human person as God created and the US Constitution.
Politicians, from both parties that claimed to be Catholic, whose lives and policies don’t reflect that truth, are a scandal to the Church, and have caused confusion among the faithful and great division with in our country. I don’t claim Donald Trump as a saint or great savior, but as our president, we must look at what his inauguration speech did, not merely in the context of history but specifically, spiritually.
President Trump’s inauguration speech, laid out our marching orders. He is declaring war on the spirits of darkness that we are combating as a nation. This is a cross road for you and I as Americans. The Old Testament is full of examples of unlikely leaders that God raised up to accomplish His will for Israel. Maybe we live in such a time.
After an election, we must put aside our differences and unite to advance the common good of our country, not ourselves or parties. We must stop hiding behind our Democrat and Republican ideologies and start putting God as our first focus and priority, and put Him back into our country’s framework, especially in our political and social spheres. This is the true driving force behind the well-being of the people of this country. Simply put, we must return to “one nation under God,” and live as such. It seems evident that this past election saw the American people saying, “ENOUGH! Let’s get back to truth, and the good of the people not the good of the elected.”
Romans 4:17-24 is worth your read. We are not to walk the Gentile path of darkened understanding alienated from God’s life. We are not to walk in ignorance of God’s laws and universal love. We are not to walk in hardness of heart, callousness, greed, licentious (no moral restrains), and every act of uncleanness. We are to put off the old Gentile man and put on Christ the new man, transformed and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
We are a nation under God. This will not be easy, or without cost. We must remember that our enemies are not people or political parties. This is God’s battle against the spirits and powers of darkness which He invites us to join. Today is a decision of choice; a cross road.
Religion and politics are not to be separated. A Democratic Catholic president once said. “Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather ask what you can do for your country.” This country needs you and I to pick up our spiritual weapons and become a part of the solution in the setting free of America from powers and dominions of darkness that have enslaved us.
For Reflection:
Do I believe in the separation of Church and State that we have been fed over the last 20 plus years? Do I wear my faith on my sleeve or does it govern my life? Do I tend to live as a Gentile or have I put on Christ? Am I willing to get off my couch or soap box and help in this battle that God is inviting me to join in?
Prayer:
Lord, enough is enough. I have walked a life apart from You long enough. Help me to put off the old man and to put on Christ, to be transformed by the Holy Spirit, and to enter this fray armed and fortified with You. Help me in this time of Cross Roads.
